2008 is turning out to be a great year for fight movies, something we at FightTube are taking full credit for. Don’t ask how we did it, just enjoy.
Never Back Down
In March we had Never Back Down; a story very reminiscent of Karate Kid, but unlikely to do for MMA what Karate Kid did for Karate in the 80’s. This was pretty mainstream and earned a sort-of impressive $25M at the box office. Review.
Red Belt
Then in May came Red Belt, the story of a BJJ instructor who gets pulled into a twisted MMA tournament. The word is that for sophisticated fight fans (not to mention BJJ instructors) this flick is a far superior to Never Back Down. It also features Randy Couture. Review.
The Foot Fist Way
This one’s a little off-beat. A literal translation of the name “Tae Kwon Do”, this film is actually backed by Will Ferrell and is supposed to be funny. I’m sure some TKD instructors will feel otherwise. Students at just about any MA school will find some scenes strikingly familiar. This movie was actually released in 2006 but since it seems to be enjoying a revival of interest, so let’s just pretend it’s new. Review.
Watch this clip to prep you for The Foot Fist Way.
You Don’t Mess with the Zohan
Can’t go wrong with Adam Sandler, right? This is in theatres right now, but isn’t quite as fight-themed as the others. Review.
Kung Fu Panda
We’re also obliged to mention this one, also in theatres now. Review.
